IS CALL PP READY FOR PRIME TIME? | by Tom Ross
Dear Ask the Expert,
We started implementing SET procedure-pointer CALL procedure-pointer
for subroutines called more than once because:
1) It's 50% faster for COBOL calling COBOL and
2) It's more than 50% faster for COBOL calling assembler.
We're currently using COBOL OS/390 v2r1. We started switching to
v2r2, but now we're waiting for the install of Enterprise COBOL v3r1.
We're on OS/390 v2r10, but upgrading to z/OS v1r2 in May.
Here's the issue: My systems folks, after talking to some IBM folks,
are saying that CALL procedure-pointer is not yet fully supported in
our environment. So they're telling us to wait for COBOL v3r1 before
using it. I've tested the heck out of CALL procedure-pointer in our
batch environment. So what's you're take on this? Is CALL pp not
ready for prime-time with COBOL for OS/390 or did my folks get some
overly cautious advice? This is important because we have the
opportunity to switch over 2000 dynamic calls to SET pp/CALL pp. That
opportunity will be lost if I wait for the Enterprise COBOL install.

NEED HELP IMPLEMENTING A SECURITY MECHANISM IN CICS? | by Ken Davies
Dear Ask the Expert,
I want to implement the following security mechanism: I will have two
user groups. I have a transaction through which you can browse and
update data. I want to restrict the update option to certain user
groups only. I would define two transaction codes for the same
transaction TRN1 for browse and TRN2 for update. Both will point to
same application program. In the application program, if a user
selects the update option, the program should check if the current
user has access to TRN2 and then only allow for update. Is it
possible to implement such a mechanism and if so how?

HOW TO AUTOMATE BATCH JOBS TO READ E-MAIL ATTACHMENTS? | by Jim
Keohane
Dear Ask the Expert,
We have customers who e-mail spreadsheet data to one of our clerks.
The data is then keyed into an online system running on our OS/390
mainframe. We'd like to automate this process by having the customer
e-mail a comma-separated-text file (or similar) to an e-mail address
set up on our mainframe SMTP server.
We'd like the ability to recognize that an e-mail with attachment has
been received and have a batch job read the attachment and save the
data in a file for further processing.
