HERCULES/370 ON STEROIDS! | by Jim Keohane
Jim Keohane waxed poetic about the wonders of Volker Bandke's turnkey
packaging of MVS 3.8j and the Hercules/370 emulator and how well it
ran on his lowly PC. Well, there's some genetic engineering underway
to graft S/390 and even Z-architecture traits onto Hercules/370.
Wouldja believe Unicode, LSA, Immediate-and-Relative and even
compression op codes downlevelled to S/370?

RED HAT ADVANCED SERVER TAKES ON UNIX, MICROSOFT ADVANCED SERVER |
News: Midrange Server
Red Hat's recently announced Advanced Server edition of its
commercial Linux is aimed squarely at two targets. The first is, of
course, Microsoft's midrange Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The second
target is Unix customers who want to use Linux, but do not want to
deal with weekly patches to the OS, or with the persistent
scalability limitations of Linux 2.4.

WHAT PRODUCT EMULATES MAINFRAME PROGRAMS? | by Jose Flores
Dear Ask the Expert,
I'm looking to migrate from a mainframe to client server
architecture. Yes, believe it or not, we still have a mainframe. Is
there a mainframe emulator that would be a quick and dirty fix? I'm
thinking of a WinNT server that would hold the old COBOL/CICS and
assembler code, and a Win98 PC that, with software emulation, would
be able to run the code as is. Is this possible?

THE MISSING LINK | MLB site strikes out in Webcast
If you tried to catch some of the opening day action Monday at
MLB.com, you may have felt a little put out. As if Mike Piazza
himself were blocking the home page, many fans couldn't access the
site's live online broadcasts. MLB.com officials say an epidemic of
baseball fever prompted a surge of traffic, which essentially brought
the site to its knees. Too many hits and too many errors, basically.
Red Sox fans will love this -- MLB.com says most of the visitors were
Yankees fans! They were logging on in droves because many of them
can't watch their prized pinstripers on TV thanks to a contract
dispute.
