IBM MEETS LOWERED ESTIMATES | News: CNET
IBM met revised first-quarter earnings estimates, but didn't say much
else regarding its second-quarter financial outlook. The company
suffered through a big slowdown at the end of the first quarter and
issued a rare earnings warning on April 8, telling analysts it would
fall short of previous estimates.
IBM DROPS PATENT BOMBSHELL | News: ZDNet
IBM has made a patent claim that could threaten the future of ebXML,
a key Internet standard. Executives from both the United Nations and
OASIS said they expected the ebXML specification to be royalty-free
and unencumbered by patent claims. Both said they were surprised by
the sudden appearance of the disclosure.
IBM BITES THE BULLET | News: Forbes
IBM's agreement to sell its money-losing hard-drive storage assets to
Hitachi Data Systems is a good sign that new Chief Executive Sam
Palmisano will not be sentimental about cutting long-standing but
money-losing businesses that don't add any strategic value. This begs
the question of why IBM clings to its PC business.
RED HAT ANNOUNCES BEEFED-UP ENTERPRISE SERVER | News: Midrange Server
Red Hat's Stronghold Enterprise server, an implementation of the
Apache open-source Web server, is available for both Linux and
selected Unix servers.
SURVEY: LINUX SMELLS LIKE UNIX, NOT WINDOWS | News: Midrange Server
According to the results of a recent survey, just because Linux is
open source, that doesn't mean it's an open invitation to hackers. Of
400 Linux developers surveyed, 78% had never experienced an unwanted
intrusion on their Linux systems, and 94% have operated virus-free.

DISCUSSION FORUMS | Operating Systems
Search390 member "BLJJNL" posted the following in the Operating
Systems forum and needs your help: "Has anyone seen the performance
of jobs using JES2 units degrade when other classes are using WLM
units? The JES2 jobs are using a production level service class; the
WLM classes are used for jobs with QA level service class (lower than
production), and no jobs were even running or submitted that would
use the WLM units. However, when the WLM units were switched back to
MODE=JES, the work in the JES2 units revved up."
Think you can solve the dilemma? If so, please share your thoughts
and suggestions. Click to post a response:

THE MISSING LINK | Children are not so smart online
Sick of that sinking feeling you get whenever your kids go online?
You know that sense that your little rug rats are far more Web-savvy
than you'll ever be. Well, a new study indicates that the long-held
theory that kids make better Web surfers than adults may not be
completely true. Among the encouraging findings for elder cyber-peeps
is that kids get frustrated with badly designed Web sites just as
quickly as their adult counterparts. See, it wasn't just your
eyesight; there really are a lot of horribly illegible Web sites out
there. Just ask your kids.
