BIG BLUE RECYCLES MAINFRAME TECHNOLOGY | News: InfoWorld
IBM's Susan Whitney, general manager of the eServer Series product
line, said in a keynote speech Thursday at the IBM developerWorks
Live conference that her company is taking mainframe-inspired
technologies and extending them out to systems such as the Regatta
and iSeries servers. As a result, applications and systems such as
remote I/O, storage, clustering and blade technologies are being
impacted.

REPORT: IBM TO LAY OFF UP TO 8,000 | News: Reuters
IBM plans to lay off as many as 8,000 workers, or 2.5% of its
worldwide staff, as the leading computer maker battles a slump in
technology spending, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online
edition on Friday.

ORACLE DISPUTES DATABASE RANKINGS | News: CNET
Oracle is disputing an earlier report issued by Gartner Dataquest

IBM RESEARCH PACKS TAPE PUNCH | News: InfoWorld
Through a combination of tape read/write stabilization technologies,
Big Blue has managed to store 1TB on a single linear tape cartridge
-- four times that of available storage tapes. Application of the 1TB
tape technology will appear in IBM's 3590 tape product -- which is
used primarily in mainframes.

SEARCH390 DISCUSSION FORUMS | Developer

Can you solve the communication tool dilemma? Search390 user
"isIUCVtheanswer" recently asked this in the Developer forum and
needs your help: "I have been developing a communication tool that
uses ISPF panels and Rexx to enable inter-user communication. I am
using the RXSOCKET library to enable communications to VB clients on
a Windows PC. The idea is that users on the mainframe and users on
PC's can have a common communication mechanism that works in real
time.

"Now, although this system works satisfactorily, there is an issue.
The socket communication functions are left uncalled when the ISPF
panel blocks for user input. An issue that could arise is that the
I/O buffer for the socket could over flow if a PC based user sends
too many messages to the application on the mainframe while it is
waiting for user input. What might be a solution?"

Think you can help? If so, please share your thoughts and
suggestions. Click to post a response:

THE MISSING LINK | Cop fined over wife's online strip

He flashed the badge; she flashed everything else. A Florida cop's
wife decided it was time to get their love life out of its arrested
state, so she posted some nude pictures of herself on the Internet.
It was supposed to be a surprise, but unfortunately the hubby's
fellow officers, including the chief, saw the steamy site and the
sultry spouse before he did. The smoking gun (or the smokin' download
in this case) caused hubby to be stripped of his gun, badge and
handcuffs for three days. Surprise! The chief said his officers
should be above such things, whether they're on the beat or off.
