THE MISSING LINK | EPA urges recycling, not dumping, computers

While you're upgrading, your old computer isn't exactly biodegrading.
It's probably sitting in a landfill somewhere giving the environment
some toxic lead kisses and remembering the good ol' days when it got
turned on. But the dump won't be the destiny of dated hardware much
longer. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency wants Americans to
treat their old PCs like aluminum cans and recycle them. EPA
officials plan to get computer carcasses classified as reusable and
encourage recycling. This is all in an effort to get the lead out of
the landfills. Many monitors are loaded with lead, which protects you
from nasty X-rays generated by the screen. But pitch the old PC into
a dump, and the lead doesn't protect -- it poisons.
