JAVA ACCESSORY FOR MAINFRAMERS | by Jim Keohane

Mainframe management and security folks may be paranoid about the
Internet. But that doesn't mean the Web isn't out to get them,
according to Jim Keohane. He says they have somewhat acclimatized
themselves to the concept of open source, but not when it's their
source code. How will they react once it's known that their Java
applications are distributed to users and browsers with almost full
source code? Read Jim's suggested security measures in this tip.

RECORD I/O, KI AY, JAVA CODER! | Jim Keohane

Does your WebSphere Java servlet have a tough time accessing MVS
datasets efficiently? Java Record I/O (JRIO) may be your answer. This
tip demonstrates how tweaking your Java servlet or application with
JRIO provides record oriented file I/O for native MVS files and VSAM
datasets.

WHAT ARE IMPACTS OF IMPLEMENTING JAVA CLASS LIBRARIES? | by Tom Ross

Dear Ask the Experts,
We have a legacy system for logistics data management developed in
COBOL. The goal is to implement in Java. Our initial research
indicates a near one-to-one conversion from COBOL to Java. However,
we are trying to understand the potential impacts of the Java class
libraries and shareware available on the Web to implement functions.

Should we expect a
1) reduction in overall size of the software by implementing
functions with Java class libraries?
2) reduction in the effort to accomplish a given set of functions
because of the use of available capabilities in Java libraries or
shareware?

THE MISSING LINK | Five-year-old wins MS proficiency cert

Remember the 7-year-old boy from the Gaza Strip who earned his
Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certificate? Well, he's been
"out-prodigied." A boy in Thailand just grabbed his MOUS. He's all of
5, an age when the only kind of MOUS most kids care about is the one
who has a dog named Pluto. And now the inevitable question: Why? Does
he WANT to get locked in a locker at school? "My father told me that
if I passed the exam, I would get a new bicycle," he told a Bangkok
newspaper. Something tells me this kid doesn't still need his
training wheels!
