FTP UTILITY: AN OVERVIEW | by Anand Vijayaraghavan

Are you having problems running FTP in batch mode? It may be because
IBM's FTP program does not return a failure return code when the FTP
is not successful. Jobs scheduled through schedulers have no way of
knowing when an FTP job fails, and dependent jobs get kicked off. To
help you avoid this problem, check out this FTP utility.

HOW TO SHOW FTP RECORDS AND BYTES SENT IN OS/390? | by Jim Keohane

Dear Ask the Expert,
We have FTP in two partitions, VSE/ESA 2.3 and OS/390 V2R10. The
messages from FTP in VSE/ESA displayed how may records and bytes
sent. But in OS/390, it doesn't show all of this information -- only
bytes sent. How can we show records sent and bytes sent in OS/390?

HOW TO PRESERVE UMLAUTS DURING FTP? | by Jim Keohane

Dear Ask the Expert:
I use FTP to transfer data between two different mainframes. FTP
seems to ignore umlauts (double dots above certain letters) is there
anything I can do to preserve the umlauts?

THE MISSING LINK | Gates gooses geese guano gunners

Penguins may be after Bill Gates' Windows, but geese have his windows
in their scopes. And his roof. And his yard. Gaggles of waterfowl
think Mr. Microsoft's mansion is the perfect place to leave their
"calling cards." Evidently these goose droppings are giving Gates
goosebumps. He asked wildlife officials in Washington state to do
something about the problem. Now the chief park ranger has the green
light to go on a massive bird hunt. Some 4,000 geese could get their
gooses cooked thanks to their scatological sorties. If you're a Linux
lover, go ahead and yell it: "Go geese, go geese!".
