IBM recently announced Linux Virtual Services, an initiative that brings together Linux and grid computing through the mainframe. IBM is encouraging you to outsource your processing and let them (through IBM Global Services) manage your servers. They'll provide all the necessary backup, network, and maintenance services, and will bill you in much the same way a utility company bills you for using electricity or gas. Depending on your applications, this could be a good thing for performance, functionality and price.
This is a concept whose time has come, say advocates of the initiative. What do you think about Linux Virtual Services? What about computing-on-demand in general? Is this a program that could work for you or is it just a marketing gimmick that sounds good on paper but flounders under the weight of the demands of an application-intensive mainframe shop? Let me know.

Storage
by BJ Rama, Site Editor
Networked storage may not be your core competence, but it affects every
decision you make. Networked storage is the right idea but, today, it creates as many problems as it solves. Help is available at Storage Decisions 2002. Learn more about it here.

Search390 member "gandolf" needs help with DB2 V 6 installation Here's the full post: We are installing DB2 v6 on a Multiprise 2003 running OS/390 2.10. We are a new DB2 customer. The installation seems to have gone OK but we are having a problem with the IVP. Specifically job DSNTEJ1 step PH01S22 abends with a 0C4 RC=10. We do not know why we are getting a storage problem when all this step does is try to do a "INSERT INTO EMP VALUES(...)" statement. If I bypass the rest of this job and proceed with the IVP I get a 0C4 RC=10 on job DSNTEJ2A in step UNLOAD. In this case this step consists of three statements:
LOCK TABLE DSN8610.DEPT IN SHARE MODE
SELECT * FROM DSN8610.DEPT
SELECT * FROM DSN8610.VPHONE
I ran the UNLOAD step with each of the above statements separately and the only one that failed on a 0C4 RC=10 is the "SELECT * FROM DSN8610.DEPT.
We have been in contact with IBM on this with no resolution so far. If anyone can give us some tips on what to look for it will be very much appreciated.

Solve the duplicate name problem
The following WebSphere Strategies Tip was submitted by Stephen Swoyer:
If you've upgraded your WebSphere Application Server (WAS) environment from an earlier version to rev. 4.0.3, you may think that you've stumbled upon an irksome new feature when you attempt to update an existing application by using the "Install Enterprise Application" installation wizard. That's because, in most cases, WAS returns an error message - "Duplicate EJB JNDI Name" - after you've gone through the rigmarole of selecting your application from among a list of installed EJBs and clicking "Next."

CICS' Open Transaction Environment
By: Jim Keohane
You've seen mention of OTE (Open Transaction Environment) here and there, usually in conjunction with Java/JVM or DB2 performance or USS services. A CICS task can now be tagged "threadsafe" instead of "quasirent" meaning it can, at least part of time, run under a CICS open TCB. That open TCB, though usually running at a lower priority so as to not impact overall CICS performance, can otherwise run full throttle. If you are familiar with such concepts as "reentrant", "reenterable" and "refreshable" then consider all three as somewhat analogous to "threadsafe."
