You knew it was only a matter of time. IBM has officially said it will end new sales of its OS/390 mainframe operating environment at the end of this year and discontinue break-fix support for OS/390 by September 30, 2004. What are you going to do?

Many of you have prepared for this and are planning to upgrade soon. If you've already upgraded you may think IBM's announcement is of little importance, but it could wreck havoc throughout the industry. Certain insiders say some users could be forced into upgrading before they're ready, to avoid losing support. Observers say the announcement could also cause hardships for some mid-size to smaller shops that can't afford to migrate to z/OS or upgrade to newer zSeries hardware.

Have you already made the move to the new OS? If so, when did you make that change and why? For those who haven't, is IBM's announcement a cause for concern? What do you plan on doing as a result? Let us know what your plans are. Contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and then take our poll: Are you upgrading to z/OS?
