THE ZEN OF FTP -- WYPIWYG? | by Jim Keohane

On MVS, what is an EMPTY FILE? On Windows or Mac or Unix, you could
say it is a file of zero length. How about a text file that consists
only of the native newline convention (Windows is <CR,LF>, Mac is
<CR>, Unix is <LF>). Are they empty files too? Or are they files
containing a single line/record of zero length? Check out this tip
for help handling unusual permutations of FTPing different files.

ANY FTP COMMANDS TO ADD DATE/TIME TO REMOTE FILE? | Developer forum

Search390.com user "ftpqns" recently asked this question in the
Developer forum: "I need help setting up an FTP batch job from
mainframe MVS to a remote server. The only twist is that the file
needs to be saved with date/time on the remote server. Is there any
FTP commands to append the date/time to a remote file name or JCL
commands to get the system date/time, pass it as a parameter to the
FTP step and append it to a remote file name?"

HOW TO FTP FROM MS-DOS TO MAINFRAME? | by Jim Keohane

Dear Ask the Expert,
I am doing FTP from an MS-DOS residing WinNT to the mainframe. I have
prepared the batch file (.BAT) to automate the process and it is
working fine. I wish to make it better for the user and so had
questions:

1. Can we trap the error code in FTP and throw relevant messages on
the screen for users?

2. Can we specify a timeout parameter during FTP?

3. What mode of transfer should I use and what shall I do to remove
the dot (.) that sometimes appears in mainframe files while doing
file transfers in ASCII?

THE MISSING LINK | Oops! True IT Blooper #66: Backup, what backup?

Who plays the role of "IT Gilligan" this time around? It's a lady
we'll call Mary. She's not quite as bad as Typhoid Mary, but her
seeming inability to back up data sure made "The Skipper" sick.
