You've had plenty of time to think about it. Now the window to
upgrade to z/OS, the new version of OS/390, is closing. Are you
ready?

Many of you have mixed feelings on upgrading from a 31-bit to 64-bit
architecture. Some users have already upgraded and some are now
forced to, as IBM will no longer support some of the earlier releases
of OS/390.

Search390.com recently ran a poll asking mainframe users if they were
upgrading to z/OS and 51% of the respondents said they would be --
soon. We were only mildly surprised to learn that 23% said they
weren't ready to upgrade but were concerned about support -- or the
lack of it. There were, of course, a handful of users - 15% - who
said there upgrade was complete and 8% said they couldn't afford it
and were unsure as to what they would do next.

Here's what we're interested in learning now. If you have already
upgraded to z/OS, what have you found to be the greatest benefit so
far? Did you experience any major problems when upgrading? Have you
experienced any cost savings? What would you recommend to users who
are about to upgrade or those who have no plans to upgrade?

If you're about to upgrade, why did you wait until now? Did you wait
because of the expense, lack of time, application issues or was it
something else? Why is it important for you to upgrade now?

If you haven't upgraded and aren't likely to do so, what are your
plans for support? What will be the benefits? What about the
consequences?

Disaster recovery: More affordable, better tools for all
By Johanna Ambrosio

The process of planning for disaster recovery won't change all that
much in the next five years, most observers agree. At the same time,
though, the tools used to back up data and ensure its recoverability
will continue to improve.
