It's no surprise that many corporations are modernizing the mainframe by putting a Web interface on old applications. While some experts believe it is only a matter of time before hackers prey on Web-enabled Big Iron, the greater concern may be protecting it from human error.

Common security issues are often attributed to a lack of multi-disciplinary knowledge and rushed jobs. Web-enabling the mainframe requires an understanding of security concerns for both systems software and the sub-systems and applications involved. Moreoever, giving external customers or partners access to mainframe data creates a heightened security risk. In order to safeguard your system, you need to have a knowledgeable team on board to thoroughly plan your Web integration.

Tell us what mainframe security issues you deal with at your shop. Are problems caused by internal misuse or external forces? Where do the problems occur -- the Internet networking level, the systems software level or the data level? What do you to do address them? When you have a moment, please take our poll on this topic.

For further advice on what you can do to protect your mainframe data, check out this recent Featured Topic, How secure is the mainframe?.

Have a good week.

>> FREE CODE!
Search390.com user Michael Simpson has written code that will allow you to submit a job that will search in any of the standard H, I or O queues in SDSF WITHOUT having to pick up each entry, search for the string, PF3, pick up the next entry, search etc, etc. If you're interested, contact Michael at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and he'll zip it over.
Note: The first one to request the code will get it immediately; others will receive it later, after Michael checks that the instructions work properly for the first person. It would be best if the first respondent knows something about JCL, ISPF variables etc., since Michael is open to suggestions for improving the code. Click here to reply to this post.
>> Recently, Search390.com user Trebor33 posted this question in the Operating Systems forum: "Hi, is there a way that an executing COBOL program can determine its own CPU usage up to the point of asking the question 'how much CPU have I used?'" To post your a reply to Trebor33, or to read Search390.com site expert Jim Keohane's response, click here.

C-callable "COBOL NOT NUMERIC" test
By Jim Keoane
A COBOL programmer has no problem pre-testing the validity of a packed decimal field (COMP-3) with a simple IF NOT NUMERIC statement, thus avoiding nasty S0C7 abends. It's not necessarily so straightforward from other languages. Click below for a SAS/C callable variant of an assembler routine that Jim K's used for years.
