LEAD STORY

SISTINA UNVEILS FILE SYSTEM FOR IBM MAINFRAME | News: Network World

Sistina Software has developed a clustered file system product that
allows a single application such as a database to run on more than
one physical server and share data and computing resources between
those servers as if it were a single system. In version 5.1 for IBM's
zSeries mainframe, the software will link an application to numerous
"virtual servers" on the mainframe.

IBM DATABASE CUTS PUT HEAT ON ORACLE | News: Reuters
IBM is cutting the price on the DB2 Workgroup Server Unlimited
Edition database for mid-size companies, which could significantly

JUDGE APPROVES MS/DOJ SETTLEMENT | News: Reuters
The gavel of U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has come down
on the side of Microsoft. She has approved the antitrust settlement
and rejected the demands of nine states for harsher punishment. While
she did agree that Gates and company tend to downplay the
ramifications of their monopolistic ways and show a "paternalistic
view" toward consumers, she didn't think the dissenting states'
demands "fit the crime" so to speak.

EXPERT: MS LOST THE BATTLES, WON THE WAR | News: Reuters
Now that the antitrust settlement has gotten a judge's blessing --
let the analyses and fallout begin! Some experts say that approval
means Microsoft is even more powerful, that no one can get in the
company's way and that Redmond has carte blanche to break down the
door into other markets. One business professor says that Microsoft
lost all the battles but won the war. But less cynical pundits claim
the settlement will ensure that Microsoft plays fairly.

THE MISSING LINK | Web scoops bench in Microsoft case

It's no secret that security issues dog Microsoft. Even the antitrust
case isn't immune. The judge's decision was supposed to be made
official on Friday at 4:30 p.m. But you could have scooped even the
most inside of insiders if you had clicked on the right URL. Someone
on the court staff put the judgment online nearly two hours before
the gavel fell. That someone evidently wanted to cut out early to
beat Beltway traffic. At least one person used a little common sense
to find the documents online before the link was released. The
court's Web staff is under fire for the sneak preview. After all,
Microsoft shares went up after the decison came down, which could
amount to insider trading.
