WHO SHOULD GET SECURITY ACCESS TO THE MAINFRAME? | by Mark Zelden

Dear Ask the Expert,
We are a new OS/390 shop that has insourced from an outsourcing data
center. I am the security administrator for the mainframe. I work in
the systems programming department, where we have DBAs. The DBAs
believe that they should have the same security access as the
mainframe systems programmers. I don't believe this should happen,
but I am having a hard time convincing the assistant vice president
that they should not have the same access. Do you have any
suggestions?

WILL MAINFRAME JOBS CONTINUE TO GO OVERSEAS? | by Rick Nashleanas

Dear Ask the Expert,
In the mainframe job trend question you answered, you said: "On the
negative side, outsourcing overseas poses a serious threat to a major
rebound. This overseas outsourcing started simply as a cost reduction
technique but is now fueled by a lack of qualified natives in the
US."

Does the last sentence imply that older mainframers like myself, who
are not ready to retire, have a good chance in the market or will
these jobs continue to go overseas?

NEED HELP WITH DB2 PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT? | by Tom Moulder

Dear Ask the Expert,
A consulting customer of mine has asked me to examine a large OS/390
(zSeries) system using DB2 V6 and give some performance improvement
recommendations. I have two questions:

1. I would like to suggest the client investigate concurrency control
using versioning instead of traditional locking. Does DB2 support
this kind of optimistic concurrency control?

2. Years ago, I obtained a substantial improvement in a system by
using a shared memory region and having the DBMS return the "results
table" to that memory space. The application then had direct access
to the table entries and avoided many, many context switches going
back to the database using a FETCH. This client's system has the
application and DB2 running on the same box and would seem to be a
candidate for this same technique. Will it still work?

GO FROM 3RD-GEN TO OBJECT-ORIENTED WITH NO PAIN, RETRAINING OR
DOWNTIME

Are you facing pressure to migrate your mainframe systems to new
technologies such as Java and EJBs? Don't be pushed! There's a much
smarter alternative to costly retraining of COBOL and PL/I developers
and re-engineering systems. IONA integrates mainframe-based
applications into an e-Business system via a service-oriented
architecture (SOA) approach. DOWNLOAD THE WHITE PAPER to learn why
global leaders like Credit Suisse are choosing the SOA alternative.

DEVELOPER FORUM | How is DISPLAY statement interpreted by CICS?

Search390.com user "Samaga" posted the following in the Developer
forum: "I have written an 'environment-independent' program. By that
I mean it can be called in both CICS and batch mode. In this program,
I have DISPLAY statements for debugging. Until the other day, this
was working fine when called in CICS. Now I'm getting an 'AZI6' abend
at the offset where DISPLAY is written. What could be the reason for
this? How is DISPLAY interpreted by CICS?
