HORRIBLE THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH SAVE AREA CHAINS | by Jim Keohane

A few of you reacted in sheer horror to the save area toggling done
in Jim Keohane's Search390.com tips "Horrible things you can do with
IDCAMS" and "Horrible things COBOL can do with IDCAMS." Well, read on
to find out if it is bad luck to break a save area chain -- or worse
-- to break the chain and insert a new but out of sequence link.

IBM INITIATIVE REACHES OUT TO MID-MARKET | News: eWEEK

IBM has announced software, training and support initiatives to help
business partners deliver IBM solutions to mid-sized companies -- and
compete head on with Microsoft's .Net. The first product, WebSphere
Portal Express is due out in December. IBM will then release a
database management system, plus Web access and security
infrastructure software. Pricing is expected to be lower than IBM
normally charges to large enterprises.

DEVELOPER FORUM | NEED HELP SUBMITTING A DB2 QUERY FROM REXX?

How do I bypass a REXX limit when preparing a DB2 query? This
question was posed by Search390.com user "Davzik" in the Developer
forum: "I need to submit a DB2 query from a REXX environment that is
more than 250 characters long. I get the IRX0030I message from
DSNREXX (launched from a batch TSO environment) at the 'prepare' of
the DB2 statement. Is there some technique to bypass that limit?"

GO FROM 3RD-GEN TO OBJECT-ORIENTED WITH NO PAIN, RETRAINING OR
DOWNTIME

Are you facing pressure to migrate your mainframe systems to new
technologies such as Java and EJBs? Don't be pushed! There's a much
smarter alternative to costly retraining of COBOL and PL/I developers
and re-engineering systems. IONA integrates mainframe-based
applications into an e-business system via a service-oriented
architecture (SOA) approach. DOWNLOAD THE WHITE PAPER to learn why
global leaders like Credit Suisse are choosing the SOA alternative.

THE MISSING LINK | Slow modem slow-cooked Wisconsin style

You've heard of road rage, but there's another breed of ire out there
-- modem malice. And when one man felt it, he got fired up and took
matters into his own hands. Or in this case, his own barbecue tongs.
Don't try this at home.
