At the end of every month, Search390.com's team runs a site report. In addition to various statistics, the reports show us what the most searched-for terms were for that given month. In October, instead of the usual mainframe-related terms like COBOL or Rexx making the top of the list, a rather unusual term came in at number one. It was "Alien Giger."

Rather than simply dismiss this as a glitch in our software, we decided to do some investigating. What we found was pretty interesting. Initially, we thought this could be attributed to a bot or spider, but we've since ruled that out because a bot or a spider would probably send the same user-agent for every search. Although it does appear that these searches all came from the same ISP, it is definitely a group of different users because the browser used was different in each search.

So what happened? Search390.com site expert Jim Keohane thinks it might have something to do with the movie Alien and the mainframe computer named "mother." Or perhaps mainframe entertainment, a company with some connection to science fiction and Giger. Mainframe is also frequently used in sci-fi and other fantasies, so maybe some Giger fans were looking for mainframe, stumbled upon search390.com, and kept on searching? Hmmm...

What's your theory? Let's have some fun with this. Send me your best guess to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll publish the most popular theories on our site.

And remember, the truth is out there!

This Week: In the forums
>> Who should get security access to the mainframe?
One Search390.com user recently asked expert Mark Zelden who he thought should get mainframe security access. Mark shared his insights and now we'd like to get yours.

Here's the question posed to Mark:
"We are a new OS/390 shop that has insourced from an outsourcing data center. I am the security administrator for the mainframe. I work in the systems programming department, where we have DBAs. The DBAs believe that they should have the same security access as the mainframe systems programmers. I don't believe this should happen but I am having a hard time convincing the assistant vice president that they should not have the same access."

So what do you think?
