GO FROM 3RD-GEN TO OBJECT-ORIENTED WITH NO PAIN, RETRAINING OR
DOWNTIME

Are you facing pressure to migrate your mainframe systems to new
technologies such as Java and EJBs? Don't be pushed! There's a much
smarter alternative to costly retraining of COBOL and PL/I developers
and re-engineering systems. IONA integrates mainframe-based
applications into an e-business system via a service-oriented
architecture (SOA) approach. DOWNLOAD THE WHITE PAPER to learn why
global leaders like Credit Suisse are choosing the SOA alternative.

WHY TO RUN LINUX ON THE MAINFRAME OVER MVS? | by Jan Lahmann

Dear Ask the Expert,
I have been asked to identify the benefits of implementing Linux on
an existing S/390 mainframe. The tricky part is that my company wants
to know the reasons for implementing Linux, how exactly will it give
them an advantage over MVS and if they should upgrade the system or
not.

HOW TO START LINUX IN AN LPAR? | by Jan Lahmann

Dear Ask the Expert,
I need a simple book on how to start Linux in an LPAR. All of the
docs from IBM and others have far too much information to dig
through. I need to know: 1) Should I have a special IODF for the LPAR
to isolate Linux I/O? 2) How do I actually get the software from a CD
or tar file onto the Linux res pack? 3) How do I connect a terminal
once I get it going?

NEED HELP WITH FTP FROM MVS TO UNIX? | by Jim Keohane

Dear Ask the Expert,
I am FTPing a file from MVS to a Unix server. From that server, it is
FTP'd to another Unix server and finally to MVS again, where the
carriage control is lost. Any suggestions?

IBM, SUN, OTHERS TOUT MERITS OF WEB SERVICES | SearchWebServices.com

Web evangelists from Microsoft, IBM, Sun and BEA attempted to
convince Comdex attendees this week that Web services would soon
become the de facto method for exchanging data electronically. It
might not happen in some sectors for a year or two, but IT pros need
to be prepared.

THE MISSING LINK | Chip me? Think tank debates chip implants for
people

Would you like to be treated like a dog? Scientists and privacy
advocates have been debating the pros and cons of implanting people
with microchips. The little glass gadgets can track you, ID you and
tell doctors your medical history should you be unable to do any of
those things. Some people say "chips ahoy" to the idea -- others say
the concept really gets under their skin.
