WITH AUTONOMIC COMPUTING, START SMALL | News: SearchSysManagement.com
Autonomic computing may be closer to reality than ever, but that
doesn't mean it's time to tear down the infrastructure to take
advantage of it. Heterogeneous architectures could run on their own
eventually, but experts at Comdex say starting with smaller projects
like self-tuning databases will open the door for big technological
advances in the future.

IBM RELEASES SELF-FIXING SOFTWARE | News: Reuters
IBM said it has begun selling a new version of its database software,
DB2 Version 8. Next week, it will release its WebSphere Version 5.
Both software products are based on autonomic computing, which aims
to create computer systems that need less human intervention.

LINUX CONSORTIUM MAKES FIRST OS PUBLIC | News: ZDNet
UnitedLinux, a consortium of four second-tier Linux companies working
to catch leader Red Hat, released its first version of the
open-source operating system on Tuesday. Analysts don't expect
UnitedLinux to turn the tables on Red Hat, but the effort is likely
to make it simpler for hardware and software companies to certify
that their products work well with UnitedLinux versions.

GO FROM 3RD-GEN TO OBJECT-ORIENTED WITH NO PAIN, RETRAINING OR
DOWNTIME

Are you facing pressure to migrate your mainframe systems to new
technologies such as Java and EJBs? Don't be pushed! There's a much
smarter alternative to costly retraining of COBOL and PL/I developers
and re-engineering systems. IONA integrates mainframe-based
applications into an e-business system via a service-oriented
architecture (SOA) approach. DOWNLOAD THE WHITE PAPER to learn why
global leaders like Credit Suisse are choosing the SOA alternative.

WILL MAINFRAME JOBS CONTINUE TO GO OVERSEAS? | by Rick Nashleanas

Dear Ask the Expert,
In the mainframe job trend question you answered on Oct. 30, you
said: "On the negative side, outsourcing overseas poses a serious
threat to a major rebound. This overseas outsourcing started simply
as a cost reduction technique but is now fueled by a lack of
qualified natives in the US."

Does the last sentence imply that older mainframers, like myself who
are not ready to retire (or even close), have a good chance in the
market or will these jobs continue to go overseas?

THE MISSING LINK | Amazon to sell scooter for high rollers

If you're head over wheels for the Segway Human Transporter, scoot
your browser over to Amazon.com. The device, formerly known as
"Ginger" and "It" before it segued into Segway Human Transporter, has
been rolled out to the general scootin' public via the online
retailer. Only about $5,000 separate you from "the future" of getting
around. Deliveries begin in March, but a few lucky people will get
their hands on the handlebars by Christmas.
