MAINFRAMES GET OPEN-SOURCE DATABASE | News: CNET
MySQL, the Swedish company that sells the open-source database of the

IBM EXPANDS ITS REACH | News: The Age
IBM and Microsoft made a number of major acquisitions last year. But
the companies' strategies are quite different. While Microsoft has
sought to buy application software companies, IBM's kitbag is
designed to help IBM and the buyers of its services run computer
systems more efficiently and make other software programs interact
with each other.

2004: BREAKOUT YEAR FOR WEB SERVICES | News: SearchWebServices.com
The CEO of Web services management provider Grand Central
Communications says that Web services won't make a huge impact until
2004, when more customers implement enterprise applications with
native Web services functionality. Craig Donato also says his company
realizes that it can't compete directly with the likes of IBM, BEA
Systems and Microsoft, but he believes there is a market for products
that extend the capabilities of those vendors' offerings.

NEED HELP WITH JES2 INPUT CLASSES? | by Steve Samson

Dear Ask the Expert,
I have two questions regarding JES2 input classes running MODE=WLM.

1. We have discovered when we get CPU contention, no jobs will start
in the system despite having coded XEQCOUNT in the JES2 deck. Some of
the jobs have to be executed. What's the right way to force them to
execute?

2. To handle FIFO (first job in must be first executed), we have to
run MODE=JES2 in an old-fashioned init. This init has an input class
of just ones. Jobs running in this class will execute in the order
they arrive to JES2. Everything works fine, but why can't we do this
in a WLM init with XEQCONT=1?

WELCOME OUR NEWEST LINUX ON THE MAINFRAME EXPERT

Anyone who works with Linux on IBM's S/390 mainframes has certainly
heard of David Boyes. He made history early in the project by running
no less than 41,400 Linux images on a single mainframe, all of them
doing real work under simulated load as Web servers. Now we're proud
to introduce David as our newest expert. He is available to answer
all of your Linux on the mainframe questions and show you how to make
multiple Linux images "dance" on a single machine.

The Brunching Shuttlecocks -- sounds like the name of a rock band
with a taste for badminton and eggs Benedict. But it's actually a Web
site that can help if your frustrations with technology or your boss
leave you speechless.
