S/390'S RELATIVE AND IMMEDIATE INSTRUCTIONS | by Jim Keohane

In the past, you may have used a COBOL compiler feature to improve
CPU performance of resultant object code. Now you can do this by hand
using newer S/390 instructions. These instructions allow you to
reduce code size and the number of base registers needed. This tip,
one of Search390.com's highest rated, offers code snippets showing
IMMEDIATE and RELATIVE instructions, and how they assemble without
base registers or USING statements.

COBOL STILL RELEVANT | News: COBOL Report

The news of COBOL's demise has been exaggerated. This column by COBOL
celebrity Jerome Garfunkel traces COBOL bashing through the ages and
how the language continues to surprise critics. Garfunkel argues the
language is far from dead. He cites how new initiatives are
integrating COBOL with the latest and greatest applications such as
Web services and Microsoft's .NET.

LEAVE SYSTEM-WIDE NOTES | by Jim Keohane

Sure you can write keyword/value pair info to one or more datasets or
members. But wouldn't you like less overhead plus the ability to
change settings on the fly? This tip says to try name/token pairs.

DEFINING A CURSOR BASED ON INPUT FIELDS | Ask the Expert

Dear Craig Mullins,
I am developing an online application in COBOL DB2 on the mainframe
whose cursor definition (the where clause) is dependent on what
fields are populated by the user. I have 13 input fields, and a user
might populate a minimum of three fields depending on available
input. Another user might populate six fields. Can I define my cursor
after checking what fields have been populated and how? Can you also
give me an example?

THE MISSING LINK | Shopkeeper takes bytes out of crime

Thanks to a shopkeeper and his snappy new cell phone, a Kodak moment
became a Maalox moment for a pair of wanted crooks. When Catherine
Zeta-Jones invites you to "get more" from your cell phone, surely
this isn't what she means!
