IDC: MAINFRAMES, AS/400 OFFER LOWER TCO | SD Times
According to a TCO survey conducted by IDC, for groups of 300 to 400
users, mainframes offer the lowest TCO while distributed PCs are the
most costly. Midrange platforms, such as the AS/400 and Open VMS,
fall somewhere in between -- that's counter to what Microsoft and
other PC-oriented vendors are claiming.

FINDING A COMMON LANGUAGE BETWEEN MAINFRAMES AND SAN
Are communication issues plaguing your mainframe and storage teams?
Maybe a lesson in language can help you translate. How do the logical
partitions defined? How do HBAs fit in? And how do switches add to
the confusion? (SearchStorage.com)

IBM SQUASHES TALK OF WEB SERVICES ROYALTIES | SearchWebServices.com
These days, just about any technology discussion can meander toward
Web services. That was the case when SearchWebServices.com spoke
recently with one of IBM's WebSphere executives.

IT CONFUSED OVER DISASTER RECOVERY ACCOUNTABILITY | Computerworld
According to the results of this Computerworld poll, IT managers and
CIOs are not sure who to point the finger at when disaster recovery
efforts fail.

BMC EXEC: MORE SHOPS 'MOVING KEY APPLICATIONS TO LINUX |
Many IT shops have begun moving mission-critical applications like
databases and human resources tools onto Linux. A BMC executive said
the pace is quickening on this trend, but companies considering Linux
must still evaluate their skill sets and consider the availability of
software. (SearchEnterpriseLinux.com)

ASK THE EXPERT | Possible problems migrating to an RDBMS environment

I have IMS, Adabas and some VSAM files. I want to migrate to an RDBMS
environment. Will I face any problems regarding the structure?
Because I believe we don't have comp-3 in the other two whereas we
have it in DB2. If I am going to migrate to an open system then the
problem of ASCII and EBSIDIC will come into picture. Is there a way
to fix this problem? Do I have a tool that will convert the
structure?

THE MISSING LINK | Sex sells for IT pros

IT people are total nerds? Actually, a new study shows that tech
types are more like Kid Rock than Doctor Who. IT people are the most
likely bunch to talk dirty over a business lunch. In fact, 11% of
those surveyed said that they do some of their best networking in
strip clubs. A lot of those places have cheap buffets, after all.
Still, wouldn't you love to see their expense reports? Do their Excel
worksheets have drop-down boxes for table dances? A pizza restaurant
chain in the U.K. paid for the study. (vnunet)
