Growing up, my mother used to say "Eddy, you don't get rewarded for doing the right thing."
I have taken that statement to heart. In many ways, it fits the mainframe. Big Iron just chugs along, processing data. Has a co-worker or worse yet an executive at your company ever asked you: "We still use mainframes?"
Unfortunately, such a question is not rare. The problem is the platform is too good in many ways. If a system is up all the time, not susceptible to the latest e-mail worm and is virtually hack-proof then the general population in a company is unlikely to take note of it.
On the surface, this may not be a bad thing but when it comes time to upgrade or to purchase new applications, management may not be so supportive. "Why do we need to put money into the mainframe? It seems to be working fine as is," an exec may say.
Have you ever experience management resistance for putting money into mainframes? Have you had to educate your managers about what it takes to keep you mainframe running smoothly? If so, please let me know. Click here to send your comments.

Search390.com user "alitareo" asked this question in our Developer forum:
I'm trying to get multi files from FTP server, save them on MVS,
decrypt those files and FTP the files to Unix box using JCL. The
problem I'm having is that file names have date attached to the end
(e.g a040429,a040430...etc) sometime there will be one file other
times more, assuming that files on FTP folder correspond to file naming convention on MVS by using MGET: 1- is there a way to dynamically allocate file names on MVS while executing the FTP? 2- If two or more files were FTPd can I select one file at a time, decrypt it, GDG it, and then FTP the file to Unix? I'm not sure if i'm asking too much from JCL (my experience is more of App. prog.) but any hint or help is greatley appreciated...thank you in advance.

| Tip of the Week: |
| The business case for service-oriented architecture is based on its potential to allow enterprises to reuse components of an application for other purposes. These become "services" that can be shared by other applications on a network -- hence the term "Web services." While SOA dates back to the 1980s, it wasn't until Web-based applications popped up during the Internet boom that the programming concept gained widespread attention. |
