Over the last month, I have talked a lot about the history of IBM mainframes. The anniversary of the System 360 was a great excuse to walk down the mainframe memory lane.
Now I want to turn my attention to the future, which is looking quite bright for the mainframes. Just the other week, IBM announced mainframe revenue increased 34%. Early in the month, Big Blue released the zSeries 890 mainframe for medium-sized customers, which opens up a new market for Big Iron.
What mainframe matters are you sweating? What issues will you face in the next few years? Here is a sample list, I came up with:
Linux on the mainframe
Web services
Outsourcing
Environmental costs (such as electricity and cooling)
Server consolidation
Hardware upgrades
Software upgrades
Increased competition from Unix boxes
Let me know if you agree or disagree with my list. Thanks. Send e-mails to Edward Hurley

User "pedjajov" asked in our Developer forum:
I wrote a Stored Procedure on Mainframe. It is defined in multiple DB2 subsystems. When I run it in SP Builder connected to one of these DB2 subsystems I have column names returned. When I do the same connected to other DB2 subsystem it returns only numbers fro column names. The same is if it is called from Java code. What can be the reason for this?

| Tip of the Week: |
| If you need any more proof that radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is about to become the next big thing, then look no further than Wal-Mart. If the massive retailer's enthusiasm for the technology is any indication, the IT community better get ready for that promised RFID revolution. |
