FEATURED TIP | Cheap CICS application logic tracing

Looking to determine the logic path of a CICS application? You could
use debugging tools but Search390.com user Jim Wilson suggests a
trick to do it without buying special software.

FTP and variable lengths | Ask the Expert

A Search390.com user asked Jim Keohan, our Web integration expert:

"I work in the MVS mainframe world and need to have access to a file
in Unix. This file has character as well as binary data and is a
variable length file. According to the Unix guy who is to provide us
with the file, FTP only works on character data for variable length
files. Therefore, everything in the file we get has been turned into
char values. This includes a what-should-be one-byte flag which is
now eight character zeroes.

It's hard for me to believe that FTP has this limitation with
variable length files. Would you know of the Unix FTP command and
parms to do this or a way around it? Basically, on the mainframe I
would like to get binary data in a variable length file from the Unix
machine."

You don't have to regen the NCP | Ask the Expert

A Search390.com user asked Jim Schesvold, our z/OS migration expert:

"When we switch from OS/390 to z/OS, will I have to redo the NCP gen?
If so, do you have any hints as to where we go for details?"

DISCUSSION | Load fail for a large CICS program

In our operating systems forum, "cicsprogrammer" asked:

"We have a C++ Application Program having a size of 20 MB.We are not
able to load the program on our CICS region. When we do a CEMT SET
NEW PROG for this, it gives a load failed for this. The other
programs in the same load library which have lesser size can be
loaded without any problems. Is there some changes to be done on the
CICS region parameters or so to make this possible. Or is there a
limit on the size of the load module(program) that can be loaded in
CICS? The problem is that the application has to be run on the client
side, and they have the capability of loading programs upto 21MB."
