I am about to take the plunge. After years of torture and torment, I am going to finally give in to my baser instincts.

I am going to buy an air conditioner.

You see I have weathered years of hot and humid summers without an AC. In the past, I could take it but I recently moved to a third floor apartment. The place makes a sauna seem downright balmy.

I have sweated enough. I am sick of waking up dripping with perspiration. My apartment will soon be filled with the buzz of an AC spewing out conditioned, cool air.

So why am I blabbing on about sweating? I can see a parallel in the mainframe world. For me, cooling is a matter of comfort but for computers it's a necessity. I am preparing to take a hit on my electric bill because of an AC. But companies that scrap their mainframes in favor of smaller servers may not realize their electricity and cooling costs may go up exponentially.

For example, a company may replace a mainframe with 250 Intel-based boxes. The thinking is it will save so much on licensing, staffing costs, etc. But just two of those boxes, in some cases, can generate as much heat as a mainframe. All of a sudden, cooling becomes a much bigger (i.e. expensive) problem.

The problem is many companies don't take cooling into consideration when designing a data center. They find out it's a problem after the fact. "Heating and cooling issues are killing us," said Steve Memenga, manager of infrastructure services, Bank of Montreal at the Data Center Decisions conference earlier this month. Overheating was such an issue at one point, he said, the company had to bring in portable fans and rig them into the data center.

So is cooling a major issue for you? Do you feel a pinch when electricity prices go up? If so, please take this week's poll on the subject. Click here.

Please send any stories you have about keeping your data center cool. Click here.

    Thanks!

Added NOPASSWORD and NOOIDCARD to batch job UserIDs, making them PROTECTED. Will this stop any inactive (longer than 30 days) UserIDs from becoming REVOKED?
