The other day there was a big SNAFU at the office. My boss came over to me and said "Ed, can you take care of this ASAP?"
I replied "OK. Consider it done. But should I send an e-mail out about it. Just as an FYI?"
Actually, I made up that little exchange but I did so to make a point. In our normal lives we use acronyms all the time often not realizing exactly what they mean. For example, most people know ASAP stands for "as soon as possible" but what about OK?
OK comes from "Old Kinderhook,"which US President Martin Van Buren used to reference in speeches. (He was from Kinderhook, N.Y.) Over time, OK became known for meaning things were alright.
Now, acronyms are really plentiful in the mainframe world. Heck, the company that is most famous for making mainframes, IBM, is an acronym.
The editors of Search390.com have come up with a new acronym quiz. I'm sure you know what CICS and MVS are but do you know what those letters stand for? Click here to take it. Enjoy!

A Search390.com user posted this question our developer forum:
I'm trying to interpret SMF-Data (eg. SMF-Record 14) using REXX. Can anyone out there tell me if it's possible to get Information out of MVS-Macros in order to interpret fields such as JFCB, DCB and UCB using REXX? If the answer is yes, using what code?
Do you have an answer? If so, click here to post it. |
