    by Edward Hurley, Editor

I have an unofficial motto: I like free stuff.

I picked it up during college when I had more needs than cash. If someone offered me something, I'd take it. Everything from my couch to some of my clothes to most of my kitchen items were hand-me-downs.

I am now a little more discriminating about what free stuff I take. For example, I was at a buddy's wedding last year and he offered me a case of oversized brandy snifters, which had been used for the centerpieces.

I have to admit that I always wanted a giant brandy snifter! I love things larger or smaller than normal. For example, I like shopping at those wholesale clubs like Sam's Club or Costco because they have gallon-sized bottles of buffalo chicken sauce and other larger-than-life items.

But I found myself turning down my friend's offer. "No thanks," I said. "I just don't have room for those snifters right now" and I didn't.

In my mind, there are two kinds of free stuff. Free stuff you need (or really want) and free stuff you accept just because it's free. The distinction being stuff you would have bought anyway and stuff you wouldn't.

Fish bowl-sized brandy snifters fall under the latter category. I really don't see myself ever going shopping with the express purpose of buying a behemoth brandy snifter.

On the other hand, a free air conditioner, in my case, would fall under the first kind of free stuff. You see my brother's brother-in-law is moving so he is giving me his old air conditioner. Readers of my columns will remember I was going to buy an air conditioner after sweating my way through many summers. (See >From the editor: Data center cooling heats up).

The reason I bring up free stuff is because I have some for you this week. I secured from Prentice Hall PTR, a free chapter of "Linux on the Mainframe", written by Eilert, Eisenhaendler, Matthaeus and Salm. To download it, just click here.

Moreover, we are having a little contest this month. I will give a copy of "Linux on the Mainframe" to the Search390.com user who submits the best mainframe tip. The tip doesn't have to be about Linux. (For the complete rules or to enter, click here).
