IBM mainframe pioneer dies at 77

Bob Evans, an IBM computer scientist who helped to develop the modern mainframe computer, died Thursday of heart failure.

'Critical' vulnerabilities in IBM's DB2

Vulnerabilities in IBM's DB2 include remotely exploitable buffer overflows and have been fixed for versions 8.1 and 7.x.

Conscience and the computer thief

Here's a German thief who may qualify as one of those thousand points -- or in this case, pixels -- of light. After the computer cad from Koblenz stole a laptop, the salesman gave chase. But the salesman should have stretched first -- he tripped on the sidewalk and broke his arm. Hearing his pursuer wail in pain, the thief halted, apologized and handed back the laptop before he took off again.
