Ever ponder how programming languages get their names?

Do programming language creators come up with the actual name that is descriptive and the abbreviation logically follows?

Or do they come up with an abbreviation or acronym they like and then find words to match it? (The US Congress did that when they passed the USA PATRIOT Act, which stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.")

The creators of the "Restructured Extended Executor" language are probably in this camp. The name hardly rolls off the tongue. But Rexx, with its regal implication, is a lot easier to say.

FORTRAN, on the other hand, stands for "FORmula TRANslation," which is pretty descriptive of what it does.

There are other ways programming languages are named of course. For example, scripting language PHP, which is a recursive acronym, stands for "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor." The history of Java's name is kind of murky. Some say it was named such because the developers were fond of a particular coffee shop. Others say it was named after the key developers: James Gosling, Arthur Van Hoff and Andy Bechtolsheim.

Now, we come to the subject of this week's Featured Topic, PL/I. When I first started covering mainframes, I figured PL/I stood for some utterly technical name. So I was surprised when I found out it stood for simply "Programming Language One."

Do you know a lot about PL/I? Or are you unfamiliar with it? In either case, you would benefit by checking out this week's Featured Topic on PL/I. You can find it by clicking here.
