ADVICE:
Is the S/390 obsolete?
A Search390.com user asked Jim Schesvold, our system programming expert:
Our bank is one of the bigger in our country. I am a member of the IT internal audit team, and we're very concerned because IT management wants to change our S/390 VSE/ESA 2.3 (soon to be updated to VSE/ESA 2.6) to Unix and Oracle platforms. IT managers base their decision on the opinion that S/390 is an obsolete platform and it doesn't have enough support. However, we want to maintain our mainframe platform and upgrade it in the future (maybe to z/890, for example). Where can we find info to
support our argument? On the other hand, the IT management has evaluated acquiring z/890 to create redundancy. Could a S/390 X17 could be operated with z/OS?

Rock 'n' roll holy water leaves building -- for eBay
[Reuters]
eBay is turning into so much more than a mere auction site. It's becoming a computer-age freak show that would make P.T. Barnum wonder if suckers were born every 30 seconds. eBay, which gave us a Senate candidate's sweat-covered napkin; a partially eaten grilled cheese with (supposedly) a likeness of the Virgin Mary lightly toasted into the bread; and (briefly) a throat lozenge spat out by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, now has sold
about three tablespoons of water from a cup thirsty Elvis drank from during a concert months before his death in 1977. The seller snagged the cup after the show and kept the water frozen all these years. The winning bid? $455 -- "thangya ver' much."
