Fill in the blank: 2005 will be the year of ________.
Seemingly, whenever a new technology comes along, pundits predict it will soon be the next big thing. This will be the year of technology XYZ, they say. But when it comes to the mainframe, developments tend to be more evolutionary than revolutionary. For example, Linux came to the mainframe with a lot of fanfare. It has found a solid place but it has hardly replaced z/OS.
Java is another example. The programming language came to the platform but it didn?t replace COBOL but found a complementary place along side it. Last year, IBM announced zSeries Application Assist Processor (zAAP), a specialized z/OS Java execution environment for customers looking to integrate Java technology-based Web applications along side existing core-business applications and data.
What technology do you think will break out this year? Will Linux on the mainframe reach a critical mass? Will zAAP make Java the language of choice for mainframe applications? Will Web services take off on the mainframe? Let me know your thoughts. Submit that thoughts here.

SNA to TN3270E conversion
An ITKnowlege Exchange member asked: We currently have centrally located IBM 390 mainframes connecting to iSeries machines in state field offices, which are using SNA -- SNUF devices. We are eliminating all SNA traffic in favor of TN3270E connections. Has anyone converted an SNA/SNUF setup to an all-TN3270 setup on the iSeries (is this even possible)? Any leads would be appreciated. Register your areas of expertise on
