FROM THE EDITOR

From the Editor

Microsoft wants your mainframe. More specifically, Redmond wants you to replace your mainframe with scores of Windows machines.

You have probably heard of the Mainframe Migration Alliance, a group Microsoft set up with companies such as Micro Focus International, Fujitsu Software Corp. and EDS to help companies move from the mainframe to Windows.

So what should IBM do to combat this latest assault on Big Iron? Should they start offering z/OS for desktops? Should Big Blue slash prices so the platform is more competitive? How about a funky ad during the Super Bowl?

I have it! IBM should pay for a product placement in episodes of popular shows such as CSI. Can't you imagine the forensic techs saying "Hey, go back to the lab and run this sample. Then jump on our IBM zSeries machine and compare the results."

Let us know what you think IBM should do. The best answer will be published in this column in the upcoming weeks.

Submit your advice here. Thanks.

IMS explained

IMS is Big Blue's venerable hierarchical database. It isn't new and bleeding edge but it does its job very well. Check out this Featured Topic on IMS.

ITKNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

SNA to TN3270E conversion

An ITKnowlege Exchange member asked: We currently have centrally located IBM 390 mainframes connecting to iSeries machines in state field offices, which are using SNA -- SNUF devices. We are eliminating all SNA traffic in favor of TN3270E connections. Has anyone converted an SNA/SNUF setup to an all-TN3270 setup on the iSeries (is this even possible)? Any leads would be appreciated. Register your areas of expertise on ITKnowledge Exchange and play the expert.

Hi. Is there any tool available for migration of COBOL 400 (AS/400) to COBOL/LE and I series AS/400 COBOL? (It would be great if you explain what these versions are and how they differ from each other). I really appreciate your help.

A Search390.com used asked David Boyes, our Linux on the mainframe expert:
How can I FTP from Unix to my mainframe without having the file row truncate after 80 characters? I used quote site lrecl=195 recfm=fb, but it cuts off after 80 characters. What am I missing?
