LEAD STORY
"Benchmarks reinforce iSeries' capabilities"
The results are in, and IBM has got to be proud. Big Blue is
expected to release this week the results of benchmark
tests of Domino and Java on the iSeries. Not only did the
iSeries blast the competition out of the water by logging a
record-breaking 100,500 Domino R5 users on a single server,
but it also took the prize -- first, second, and third
place, to be exact -- in the Standard Performance
Evaluation Corporation's SPECJBB2000 server-side Java
benchmark.

[1] "IBM, BackWeb ink software deal"
IBM has licensed BackWeb Technologies' commercial "push"
software for use in its WebSphere middleware application, a
layer of software that supports commercial Web
applications. Through the push technology, designed to send
information directly to people's desktops over the
Internet, BackWeb will deliver personalized information
from Web applications to WebSphere users via their desktop
PCs, personal digital assistants, fax machines or cell
phones.

[2] "IBM analysts ponder CEO swan song"
Is Lou Gerstner's reign as the head of IBM coming to a
close? The CEO's contract expires in March 2002, and at the
age of 59--just one year away from the age when all senior
IBM executives retired over the last 30 years--he isn't
likely to renew it, insiders speculate.

[3] "Group offers new version of Linux standard"
A standard's group has released a version of a Linux
standard that will make it easier to guarantee that
software will work with different versions of the Linux
operating system. The new version 0.9 was released for a
30-day public review period, after which the draft will be
submitted to the Free Standards Group.

[4] "IBM details new version of DB2"
So what if Oracle just put the finishing touches on its
pending 9i database, IBM's got a new version of its own
database? The new iterations, in fact, will be available
within a week of each other; DB2 will ship on June 8 and
Oracle 9i will reach general availability on June 14.

[5] "Microsoft attacks the open-source roots of Linux"
It comes as no surprise, really, but Microsoft says it has
no intention of supporting open-source systems. In fact,
one Microsoft executive all but declared war on open
source, calling it a dangerous way to create software
because it makes it impossible for anyone to make money, or
to protect their intellectual property rights.

[2] "V5 makes iSeries more competitive in database arena"
The iSeries integrated database has been one of the
platform's strengths for many years. V5 continues to
improve how DB2 UDB for iSeries stacks up against other
databases within IBM's DB2 family and against Oracle,
Microsoft SQL Server, and other relational database
management systems. Read why he feels that with the new
release nothing should hold the iSeries back from competing
with other database platforms.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
---------------------------------------------

"Repo man thrives on tech troubles"
James Kevern is living proof that one man's loss is another
man's gain. Kevern is a repo man, and repo men are very
busy men right now in Silicon Valley. As the fortunes of IT
companies continue to sag, many high-tech workers who have
recently found themselves out of work are also finding
themselves out of a fancy ride they can no longer afford.
And they get little sympathy from guys like James Kevern.
"High-tech people suck to deal with," Kevern said. "They
act like they're above it."
