LEAD STORY
"Some iSeries and AS/400 upgrades are in short supply"
IBM says it can ship Model 270 and 8XX iSeries machines
with S-Star processors within a week or two of initial
orders. But the fine print says many of the processor
features for the Model 270 machines will likely take six
weeks to be delivered. This is nothing compared to the
Northstar PowerPC-based Model 730 and Model 740 machines,
which take over four months.

proxy battle"
Last week, Computer Associates International filed a
lawsuit against former Sterling Software founder and
chairman Sam Wyly, who is trying to dump CA's current
management in favor of his own choices. CA claims
Wyly's proxy battle violates a noncompete clause he signed
when he sold Sterling Software to CA last year.

"Computer passwords reveal workers' secrets"
Someone may not be able to guess your exact password, but a
new study shows that it's not too tough to figure out how
you came up with it. After interviewing 1,200 corporate PC
users, British researchers found that most people choose
words that relate to their families, their favorite
celebrities or adjectives that describe themselves. Less
than 10% of those polled fell into a less definable
category, picking passwords seemingly at random. The
pollsters were able to discern something about these so-
called "cryptics." Apparently, they're most likely to be
your prototypical computer geeks.
