LEAD STORY
"Duncan guarantees iSeries future"
Some IBMers are probably still licking their wounds from
the "Magic Box" campaign, but the spirit of it may still be
a viable option for the iSeries. In a recent interview with
the Insider Weekly, iSeries General Manager Buell Duncan
would not commit to the idea of a universal server IBM
dubbed the Magic Box, but he did little to squash it.

[1] "WebFacing may be free, but it's not for everyone"
IBM boasts a full stable of development tools designed to
put a pretty face on legacy applications, but the company
says WebFacing is different. Although WebFacing doesn't let
you change the program logic or sequence of screens that an
application cycles through, IBM says it's not a screen
scraper because it works directly with the DDS rather than
intercepting the 5250 data stream.

[2] "Microsoft, IBM wrestle for cyberspace"
Middleware programs will increasingly become more important
to the Internet as IBM and Microsoft duke it out over
supremecy of the middleware market. IBM's flagship
WebSphere product is in direct competition with .Net,
Microsoft's strategy for selling software and services over
the Internet. IBM is hoping to use its stronghold in
mainframe computers to give it a boost in the Web services
market, just as Microsoft is hoping its desktop dominance
will give it an edge.

[3] "IBM exec calls MS arrogant on open source"
IBM has deemed recent comments critical of open-source
software from Microsoft officials "arrogance" and
counterproductive. Microsoft officials have called the open
source model anti-American and destructive to intellectual
property while IBM, which has recently embraced open-source
software in some ways, says Microsoft is swimming against
the tide.

[4] "Struggle for CA continues"
Computer Associates International Inc. has said its top
executives won't receive any bonuses in fiscal year 2002,
which comes at a time when the management has come under
fire from a shareholder who wants new management brought
in. The company said the top two company officials didn't
receive performance-based awards because of a "change in
the company's business model, which changed revenue
recognition and resulted in a net loss for the year."

seat"
This independent company realized it needed to find a new
way of using the Internet to make its business more
profitable, without putting a lot of money out. Until
recently the dealers had access to information via multiple
dial-up lines connecting to the AS/400 or needed someone
to manually fax them the required information. Either way,
customer communications consisted of long-distance
telephone lines and locally installed emulation software,
which were often not very reliable. Check out this article
to see what this company came up with.

"A new way to thumb a ride"
Are you tired of flailing your arms to hail a taxi and
shouting at the top of your lungs to get the driver to pull
over? Well forget about all that heavy lifting when you're
in need of a lift. In Dublin, Ireland they're trying out a
more civil way of corralling cabs. Riders can let their
fingers do the walking and type an SMS text message by
mobile phone to the cab company. Once the nearest driver
gets the word, he calls the potential passenger to say he's
on the way. That's gotta be the fairest way to get a fare.
