In a recent interview with the Insider Weekly, iSeries General Manager Buell Duncan would not commit to the idea of a universal server IBM dubbed the Magic Box, but he did little to squash it. Although WebFacing doesn't let you change the program logic or sequence of screens that an application cycles through, IBM says it's not a screen scraper because it works directly with the DDS rather than intercepting the 5250 data stream. IBM is hoping to use its stronghold in mainframe computers to give it a boost in the Web services market, just as Microsoft is hoping its desktop dominance will give it an edge. Either way, customer communications consisted of long-distance telephone lines and locally installed emulation software, which were often not very reliable.
