LEAD STORY
"Lotus, iSeries on the Federal Aviation Administration
radar"
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hopes to soar
with a new Lotus Domino/Notes e-mail system. Previously the
air travel regulator used cc:Mail software, which has been
phased out. The FAA also moved its e-mail servers from
Microsoft NT boxes to iSeries 400s, in hopes of increasing
Web application availability and decreasing the number of
servers to support.

[1] "Update brings iSeries HTTP server up to speed"
IBM recently released some program temporary fixes (PTFs)
for its Apache-powered HTTP Server for the iSeries. New
functions, thanks to the PTFs, include the Apache Portable
Runtime (APR) interface, the ability to run CGI programs
using Server Side Includes (SSI), and the Web distributed
authoring and versioning (WebDAV) function.

[2] "New virus travels in PDF files"
There is good news and bad news on the computer virus
front. The bad news -- there is a virus known as "Peachy"
that uses Adobe's popular PDF file format to spread. The
good news -- the virus spreads only with Adobe's Acrobat,
not through the free readers available for download all
around the Web. Peachy exploits an Acrobat feature that
embeds files within a PDF, but it can only be opened using
Acrobat.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
--------------------------------------------

"Gadget with more byte than bark"
Dog owners... listen up. Ever been frustrated because you
just don't know what's gotten your moody mutt so miffed?
You can soon get the answer straight from the horse's --
make that the DOG'S -- mouth. Inventors in Japan claim to
have developed a high-tech canine translator. The gadget,
called the Bow-lingual, can supposedly interpret a dog's
barks and growls into human emotions. The Bow-lingual
consists of a small microphone, attached to the dog's
collar, that "reads" dog-speak by matching sounds to a set
of pre-programmed wave patterns. There are plans to adapt
the technology so that anxious owners, who are away from
home, can be kept up to date with their dog's feelings
delivered straight to their handset.
