Free advice: How to improve iSeries performance If you work with any type of computer equipment, your top concern is usually performance. You want Web sites to run quickly and without errors. You want to access files in the database effortlessly. You want e-mail to flow smoothly. The reasons go on and on. The iSeries is one of the most reliable pieces of hardware available, but there are still times when performance isn't as good as it should be. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve it, and site expert John Brandt will be online this week to tell you what they are. Log on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 11am EST (16:00 GMT) for search400's Live Webcast, iSeries Performance -- Time for a tune-up. John Brandt will discuss low-level tuning: defining subsystems, classes, memory pools and allocation of resources to improve your performance. And following his presentation John will answer any questions you may have. This is an opportunity to get advice on how to handle your performance problems. Don't miss out -- register for this event today. |

Restarting TCP/IP within a CL The scenario: A user, who has more than 70 remote sites to maintain, created password-protected utilities for end users to follow with his instruction. The problem: He's trying to create a utility that lets users end and restart TCP, but he can't figure out a good way to have the program check to see if TCP has completed shutting down. Any ideas?

Zipping and unzipping files on the 400 This user says he has a job that goes to an FTP site using the AS/400 FTP command and GETs a file to be processed on the AS/400. The problem is the file has become rather large and the sender now zips the file. He wants to know if there's a way to unzip the file with the job running in batch mode. Read the suggestions several other users had. |

| Tip of the Week: |
FTP save files GET as well as they PUT FTP isn't quite an exact science, and there's room for different ways for transferring files -- as many readers have pointed out. Writer Joe Hertvik used some of your feedback to his previous tip (Tricks and techniques for FTPing OS/400 save files) to dig even deeper into FTPing save files from one iSeries to another. |
