Improving the iSeries' appeal
IBM's marketing of the iSeries -- or the perceived lack of -- has always been a source of contention among iSeries users. At last fall's COMMON conference users raised their voices again, calling for IBM to focus on marketing and advertising for the machine.
IBM took note and recently announced several initiatives to make iSeries servers more appealing, including cutting the base price of the i820 by 63% for certified sales partners. The company also said it will spend $300 million this year in marketing and development efforts for the iSeries line. That will include road shows throughout the U.S. to educate customers about the iSeries.
But are those initiatives enough to convince users of IBM's dedication to the server line? Kim Stevenson, vice president of iSeries marketing, said in an interview with Insider Weekly that it takes time to implement plans but the long-term dedication is there. What do you think? Do you like the initiatives? Do they make you feel more secure about the future of the iSeries? Can they spark interest in the platform? Let us know. Take our poll and send me your thoughts. I'll compile the best comments, so please include your name, position and location (your company is optional).

Netserver performance problem Since switching to Windows 2000/XP, one user says it now takes several minutes rather than the 30 seconds it used to take to open an Excel spreadsheet that has several linked spreadsheets. IBM says it's Microsoft's problem, not theirs. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have a solution? |

Hot-swapping a job's USRPRF
Have you ever been in the situation where you suddenly realize that you're signed on under the wrong user profile and you don't have the necessary authorities to do something about it? You could sign off and then sign on again.... or you could use the API's QSYGETPH, QSYRLSPH and QWTSETP to change the job's user profile in "mid-flight." |
