.NET vs. Java
It's not surprising that both IBM and Microsoft are jockeying for the leadership position in the new paradigm of Web programming languages. Microsoft is pushing its .NET initiative centered around C#, its new programming language. By contrast, IBM is backing Java for everything from mainframes to desktops.
But in the end (if there is such a thing) which company's approach will win out? Microsoft's .NET initiative or IBM's Java-based strategy? Or will it be something else? There's wide acceptance of Java, but Microsoft is putting a lot of money and marketing muscle behind .NET.
What about all those Visual Basic programmers or those who use C++ or even COBOL? Is there room for numerous languages?
Is this really a battle among vendors or is it something that affects your daily operations? Let us know what you think about this ongoing debate, and while you're at it, let us know what programming language you use. Contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Finding the missing piece of the V5R1 installation manual
If you've installed or upgraded OS/400 software before, you know it's IBM's practice to send a printed copy of its Software Installation manual along with the step-by-step instructions for installation media and other documentation. A key chapter is Chapter 3, Preparing for Software Installation. There's only one problem with that chapter in the V5R1 Software Installation manual: IBM left it out of the paper manual and moved it to the V5R1 eServer iSeries 400 Information Center Web site. Gone is the relatively easy task of documenting your installation and making sure you did it correctly.
