LEAD STORY

THE OS/400 TO PARTICIPATE IN WEB SERVICES | News: The Four Hundred

IBM plans to grid-enable the OS/400 platform so it can fully
participate in two evolving and possibly merging computing
architectures: grid computing and Web-based services. Exactly how
the iSeries will participate in either architectures individually
or in these architectures if they merge is unclear. But either
architecture alone offers interesting possibilities.

INCREASING FTP TIMEOUT VALUE | Tip: Search400

Many times you want to keep a DOS FTP session open to your
iSeries machine. The default timeout value for inactivity of your
session is five minutes or 300 seconds. If you'd like to increase
this value, check out this tip from Jerry van Dinther for a simple
command.

USING CPYTOSTMF TO CREATE DOWNLOAD FILE | Advice: Search400

Dear Ask the Expert,
We are trying to create a download file from an iSeries 400 to an
agency that requires a fixed length, ASCII file with carriage
returns and line feeds. It appears we can have one or the other
with the CPYTOPCD command based upon the TRNFMT parameter.
CPYTOSTMF does not appear to be doing the EBCDIC to ASCII
conversion. When trying to use the STMFCODPAG parm it comes up as
not valid. Can you help me with this problem? Application
development expert John Brandt offers some advice.

THE MISSING LINK | Online porn site said to have duped Army

When the U.S. Army says, "be all you can be," they probably didn't
have this in mind. A computer specialist convinced the military to
pay for a T1 Internet line that he said they needed to communicate
with troops stationed in Bosnia. But this was allegedly a bunch of
Balkan baloney. Investigators say he really used the line to run a
for-profit sex show on the Web. Major mistake! The indictment says
the T1 cost the Army more than $100,000 between 1997 and 1998.
