New tip tackles iSeries security issues
When it comes to security concerns, no system is immune. Even the iSeries, known for being almost impenetrable, can be open to intrusion if the network it's connected to isn't secure.

Security flaws recently reported in SNMP could leave some shops exposed. Those flaws could allow attackers to gain control of systems or take down networks, according to the Computer Emergency Response Team. IBM has released PTFs for this, but keeping up with software patches and updates can be almost impossible for companies. I'm sure many an IS manager lies awake at night worried about his system's security.

To help you stay on top of security issues, we've created a security newsletter. Each month we'll send you a featured tip, as well as other iSeries security advice and information, that will allow you to be proactive in securing your systems. Last month our tip was about security policies. And April's tip, which will be sent to subscribers Tuesday, April 9, describes how to keep unauthorized mailers off your iSeries server.

The newsletter will also feature tips submitted by Search400 members. What do you do to maintain your system's security? Do you have any advice, suggestions or tips others would be able to use? Send them in. Not only will you be helping others, but you'll automatically be entered in our Tip of the Month contest.

And if you don't already received the Security Tip Newsletter, update your profile and subscribe today.

>> WRKACTJOB command eat up CPU?
User Don Bourne asks, "When a user on the OS/400 uses the WRKACTJOB command and stays in the command for a lengthy time, hitting refresh or running the auto refresh, does this use up a considerable chunk of CPU that could cause other jobs to slow down?" Another user says no. Read his explanation.

>> Your own private iSeries
Is there a Web site that lets you dial in to an iSeries machine so you can develop RPG programs from home? There's a couple, according to users. Find out what they are.

>> DDM files and triggers
One user writes, "We are experiencing a problem writing to a DDM file linked to a logical on a remote iSeries whose physical has a 'before' trigger program to create a unique key. When the RPGLE program tries to write the record to the DDM file on our home system, it gets a RNQ1021 message saying 'an output record with a duplicate key field was detected'. Think you might know what's going on?

Tip of the Week:
Three fun things you can do with WRKACTJOB
Sometimes it's the simple tools -- like OS/400's green-screen Work with Active Jobs (WRKACTJOB) -- that you take for granted. WRKACTJOB's a lot older than many readers on this list and -- because of that longevity -- it contains some useful features that can be handy in different situations. Joe Hertvik shows you three fun things that WRKACTJOB can do.
