Large conferences on their way out?
As we finish off a week at the spring COMMON conference, a question comes to mind: Are conferences such as this doomed to become a thing of the past?

True, they're a great source for education and hands-on ways to learn new technologies. Everyone we spoke to at last week's COMMON said the sessions and labs were fantastic. But the number of attendees at the show continues to decline. Last week's conference drew nearly 2,500 attendees, which is down from last spring's number of approximately 4,000 attendees. And last fall's show drew just under 3,000 people.

That's not good news for exhibitors who are trying to spread the word about their company and products to users. Some say the traffic gets worse at each show and are considering not showing at future conferences.

One can only guess at the reasons for the drop in attendance. Reduced budgets? Terrorism concerns? Fewer iSeries users? Smaller, targeted shows more appealing? Two too many COMMON conferences? Is it time to reduce the number of COMMON conferences to one?

What do you think? E-mail me with your comments, and we'll share the best ones in a future article.

Tip of the Week:
Squeeze more information out of DSPPTF
Most administrators use the OS/400 Display PTF (DSPPTF) command to check the status of their PTFs before or after a PTF installation. When you run this configuration -- DSPPTF LICPGM(*ALL) OUTPUT(*) -- DSPPTF presents a screen display of all the PTFs that have been applied against all of your iSeries 400 licensed programs.

DSPPTF can also be used to display PTF information for one individual product. However, with so many different OS/400 products and features installed on a typical iSeries system, it can be a real headache paging through every product using LICPGM(*ALL). This tip simplifies the process.
