THE MISSING LINK | Using robotics, researchers give upgrade to lowly
rats

Remember when "The Rescuers" was just an animated movie? Rescuer rats
are no longer furry, scaly-tailed figments of Disney's imagination.
Scientists have wired up rats' brains and turned them into
"rodentbots," so to speak. Using tiny video cameras to "see" and a
laptop to send radio signals, scientists can "steer" the rats with
stimuli. Hitting the J key makes them scurry left, L makes them dart
right and K sends the reward -- a shot of euphoria to the brain's
pleasure center. No, this will not be the next hot pet/toy in Japan.
Scientists hope to put the high-tech vermin to work inspecting
disaster areas.
