Hundreds of iSeries white papers just a click away
When it comes to researching hardware or software for your shop, there's nothing like an independent review of the product to help you decide whether it's right for you. And white papers often can provide that outsider point of view. Not only do you get information on the product specifications and features, but often you also learn how other companies are using the products and how they're working out for them.
But finding those white papers can be a hassle, so we've added a new section to the site to help you out. We've gone out and found more than 200 white papers, both from independent sources and vendors, and posted them on Search400. No longer do you need to search the Web for iSeries-specific papers -- they're all here.
The White Papers Section is broken down into task-specific categories, such as development, OS/400, security and storage. You may browse by subject or author or use the search engine for fast results. We've done the legwork for you -- you just need to click over to get to everything.
And if you know of a white paper you think should be included, send it in. We'll gladly review it to make sure the content is appropriate and then post it.

Limit to size of files being FTP'd?
Pablo is trying to FTP a file larger than 1.5GB from his iSeries. It transfers 1.5GB, then cancels. Is there a limit on FTP transfers? Does he have to change any parms on FTP server attributes?

Free format RPG IV
This member works at a Synon site and consequently still uses RPG III code. They'd like to skip the fixed-format RPG IV syntax and move directly to free format RPGIV to complement their move to Java. He asks if anyone can recommend documentation or a tutorial for Synon/RPGIII/Java programmers wanting to move to free format RPG IV. Another user had a suggestion. Are you in a similar situation? Click over to read what he said. Or post your own suggestions. |

Issue interactive status messages in a CL program
Although the Send Program Message (SNDPGMMSG) command serves many useful purposes, one of Joe Hertvik's favorites is to use SNDPGMMSG to send a status message for update purposes from an interactive CL program to the bottom (line 24) of an interactive green-screen display. According to Joe, this technique is particularly valuable when you're calling a long-running job -- such as a customized CL backup program -- that must be run interactively from the system console.
