Tech tips from IBM
If you're looking for tips and advice for managing your systems, there's no better place to turn to than the source. That's just what Search400.com has done with its administrator tips.
Starting in August, iSeries experts who also help write IBM's Redbooks will be writing the site's biweekly administrator tips. Through its International Technical Support Organization (ITSO), IBM will be providing tips on such things as OS/400 upgrades, backup and recovery, networking issues and iSeries performance. Our hope is that by tapping into the minds of the people who help create the products for the iSeries we'll be able to give you nuggets of information general users might not know about.
Subscribers received the first tip from IBM last week. "Configuring e-mail with Infoprint Server" written by Bill Shaffer, iSeries product manager for output solutions at IBM, shows you how to use Infoprint Server to set up OS/400 to convert any standard iSeries spooled file to PDF and send it as e-mail.
The next tip from IBM will be sent out Wednesday, Sept. 4. If you don't already subscribe to these tips, you'll want to make sure you do. Update your profile and make sure Administrator Tip is selected. Don't miss out on expert advice from the people who know the iSeries inside and out.

Mapped drive dropping connection
"Photz1" isn't sure if his problem is with Windows 98 or Client Access. What happens is that in the morning when logging on to the Windows PC, the I: drive is mapped to a share in the QDLS folder. Three to four hours later, however, a Windows app tries to use the I: drive and crashes with the message "path not found." When "Photz1" looks in Explorer he sees that the I: drive is not available until he disconnects and re-maps the drive. He wonders if the IFS has a timeout setting, or what from the iSeries side might be causing this. Site expert Shahar Mor has some advice. Click over to read what he said or post your own suggestions.

How to control Updates and Deletes in SQL Selects
"Bocabuilder" says they're researching security for SQL. Supposedly, there is a way to enable people to do Selects with SQL but also control who has the ability to do Inserts, Updates and Deletes. "Ringercr" offers a suggestion. Read what he said and add your ideas.

Secret of the spoolfile
How do you copy a AFPDS spoolfile that uses overlay to a file? If you have an answer, "msabsh" would like to hear it. |
