iSeries shops please do apply

Is your company taking the iSeries to new levels? If so, we want to hear about it.

We're looking for medium- and large-scale companies that are blazing new trails in iSeries computing. Are you pushing the limits of the iSeries server capacity or taking Web development for the iSeries to the next level? If the answer is yes, then submit your nomination for Search400's IT Excellence Awards. This is your chance to toot your own horn and tell everyone about your accomplishments and success stories.

There are two categories you may submit for:

Scalability:
This award recognizes developers and end-user companies that are pushing the limits of the iSeries server capacity. Nominees must demonstrate excellence in building iSeries environments that support large databases, transaction loads or data transmission rates.

E-business:
For this award we're looking for developers and end-user companies who have taken Web development for the iSeries to the next level using Java, WebSphere Development Tools, RPG and other tools. Nominees will have created original, innovative Web applications that take the company to the next step in Web access.

The Search400 IT Excellence Awards recognize the IT achievers at end-user organizations who design, build and manage these complex technologies. Particular consideration will be given to projects that have a significant impact on the business, increase efficiency, significantly reduce costs and provide demonstrable ROI. Nominations for vendors aren't allowed, but vendors may nominate their clients and customers.

When submitting your nomination, please answer all the questions and provide as many details as possible. The more information you provide, the better your chances.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, Oct. 25. The winners will be announced during a virtual awards ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 20. All winners will be required to participate in this live Webcast.

We know many of you are doing new and innovative things with your iSeries. Go ahead, tell us about them. Visit www.search400.com/awards for more information.

>> IFS e-mail problem solved
"Poptop" was about to blow his top. He said he's able to create a command to convert his spoolfiles to PDF format into IFS. But when it came to e-mailing, he found that SNDDST does not support an attachment from the IFS. Fortunately, good ole "Dale1641" came through with a solution, and now "Poptop" can keep his lid on.

>> The PPP profile that wouldn't go away
Things aren't so sunny for "JimmyShine." He just upgraded to 5.1 and tried to get universal connection going. During the course of his many tries, a PPP profile was created and now it won't go away. The message says that it's in use by another job, but the job has ended. Do any of you know tricks around this Catch-22?

>> How to do a partial restore
Working with system backup files is a new thing for "Stretch." He needed help restoring a specific file from a backup tape created in 1995. "MindNL" came to the rescue.

Tip of the Week:
Use CPU utilization guideline values to monitor high-priority (interactive) jobs
Don't wait until your system slows to a crawl before dealing with performance issues. By monitoring response times for critical applications, you can get warnings in advance of any problems.

This tip provides updated cumulative CPU utilization guideline values for monitoring your "interactive-like," response time critical applications. Use a guideline value to alert you to possible response time degradation in the "near future" or a possible cause for "longer than normal" response times.
