What's your favorite product from 2002?
Every week it seems there's always some new tool or product being announced. The press releases and company announcements always rave about how great the product is -- the new technologies being used, how no other product does what their does, how it will save you money, and all the bells and whistles.
And that's what they're supposed to do -- they want to persuade the press to write about it and get you to buy it.
But how many of those products live up to their promises? How many make you say, "Wow! How did we ever manage without this?" I imagine there are plenty that you'd think are OK -- and some that aren't worth a second glance -- but which ones do you consider great?
If you could select one tool released this year as your favorite, what would it be? It can be a systems management product, a programming tool, a security tool -- anything you'd use in your job. Send your comments to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Please be sure to include your name, title and company. We'll compile all the responses and include them in an upcoming article.

Accessing SQL Server data in WebSphere environment
"Treetopper" says they are running WebSphere and writing Java servlets on the iSeries. They're using JDBC and SQL to access the iSeries data, which works fine. What he'd like to know is how do they access MS SQL Server data in the same environment? Web development expert Jim Mason has some advice.

API QUSRJOBI -- Please help
"StricklandGHV" writes, "I am trying to use this API to return the scheduled time and date of a job back to my RPG program. However, when the data structure is returned (Format JOBI0400) the value in the date and time area is listed as e???. The description on the IBM Web site states that -- date and time job is scheduled to run. Date and time the job is scheduled to become active. This field is returned as hexadecimal zeros if the job is not a scheduled job. The format for this field is the system time-stamp format. How do I use this returned value in my RPG?"

Using journaling to audit a file
"Dlberry" needs to use iSeries journaling for file auditing purposes. He asks, "If I do a DSPJRN to an outfile, how do I get the "Entry Specific Data" (field JOESD) broken down into the file's fields for printing or displaying?" Fortunately, "MindNL" has a solution. |

| Tip of the Week: |
Enhance reports with highlighted or underlined text
Have you ever wanted to highlight or underline a field in a report? This can be done two ways: by using a print file (PRTF) or embedding the code within the print specifications of an RPG program. Site expert Dwight Beech shows you how to use both methods to improve the look of your reports.
