Today's Featured Tip
================================================================

Improve the readability, stability of your code

After you write a program, you don't generally wash your hands
of it and be done with it. Over the years it needs to be
maintained. To make that job easier, it helps to have code
that's easy to read.

To do this you can use IF statements -- or you may use the
SELECT operation code. A less complicated alternative, the
SELECT statement is used when you want to process one of several
alternative calculation operations. Check out this tip from
Search400.com expert John Kohan to learn more.

Answers to Other Programmer Questions
================================================================

Have the results of a SELECT statement written to an outfile
Outfiles are the status quo on the AS/400, but did you know that
SQL can produce them intrinsically? Follow these steps to have
the results of a SELECT statement written to a database file
(i.e., an outfile), embed a SQL SELECT statement in an INSERT
statement.

Objects "not saved" during a backup
You can also use a SELECT statement during a SQL session to find
out which objects where not saved during your backup.

How to substitute Purchase for 'P' and 'Manufacturing' for 'M'
This Search400.com member shows you how to substitute Purchase
for 'P' and 'Manufacturing' for 'M' and default 'Administration'
for ' '(blank) in a SQL/400 SELECT statement.

"CLEAR" advantage over resetting work fields
This user said that at times they need to reset the value of work
fields, data buffers and screen fields. If a field is an alphanumeric
type, then they may move "*BLANKS" when we want it "reset". If a
field is numeric, then they may "Zero Add" "*ZEROS" to the field. But
the "CLEAR" operation code provides much more flexibility.
