Today's Featured Tip
===============================================================

End of a year, start of a new era

Another year has come to an end. There were some exciting new
developments in the world of WebSphere during 2002 with the advent
of new Eclipse-based development tools. On the iSeries we saw an
awesome new version of the WebFacing product as well as wizard-
based support for PCML to integrate legacy applications (RPG or
COBOL) with new Java Applications. But IBM isn't stopping there.
Expect to see even more amazing features in 2003, as well as less
expensive, less complicated Web development tools.

IBM targets smaller shops with a new line of WebSphere products
IBM has recognized that small and medium size businesses need low-
cost, easier-to-use products that can be leveraged by the
thousands of companies that can't afford or don't have the
technical expertise on staff to take advantage of its high-end
WebSphere products. As a result, these smaller shops can look
forward to the new "Express" line of WebSphere products. They are
designed to be quickly and easily installed, and they provide an
immediate return on investment.

Get started building Java Web apps in WDSC
IBM's WebSphere Development Studio Client (WDSC) for iSeries is a
powerful, easy-to-use tool for building every type of Web
application you can think of. Web development expert Jim Mason
offers a step-by-step guide that shows you how to quickly build
simple Java Web applications that access iSeries data and call RPG
programs with a browser interface.

WebFacing extends the reach of your legacy code
If you are a typical iSeries shop, you probably have thousands of
existing 5250 applications developed over many years. Those
applications aren't going away anytime soon and represent the core
business processes of your business. What if you could Web-enable
those applications without modifying a single line of code? What
if you could extend the reach of your system via a simple Web
browser? That's exactly what IBM's iSeries tools developers have
done for you with WebFacing. Web development guru Bob Cancilla
shows you step by step just how easy it is to WebFace your apps.

Working with the WebFacing server
"Marier" wanted to know how the WebFacing server works, how does
the data gets from the 5250 application, and in what format should
it be in. He also wondered how Java Beans work on the WebFacing
architecture. He started a discussion thread in the Search400.com
WebSphere and Web Development Forum. Read the responses to his
post.

FREE WHITE PAPERS | Search400.com

When it comes to researching hardware or software for your
shop, there's nothing like an independent review of the product
to help you decide whether it's right for you. And white papers
often can provide that outsider point of view. But finding
those white papers can be a hassle, so we've added a new
section to the site to help you out. We've gone out and found
more than 200 white papers, both from independent sources and
vendors, and posted them on Search400.com. No longer do you
need to search the Web for iSeries-specific papers -- they're
all here.
