The records in the file had blanks in the last 5 bytes of each record. The records on the PC were only 275 bytes since the FTP transmission automatically chopped off the last 5 bytes. How do I FTP the file and keep the records at 280 bytes, thus keeping the last field of five blanks? The computer proclaimed 8,500 patients dead -- news that came as quite a surprise to those people who were not wearing toe tags and had all their vital signs. So what happened? A computer glitch, of course. Evidently, during a file update an important digit was dropped -- the one that distinguishes between "deceased" and "discharged to home." That's a pretty big digit.
